It was built in Beaune, at the heart of the Duchy of Burgundy, in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy, and his wife Guigone de Salins who wanted to create a hospital for the “poor”. For several centuries, the hospital treated free of charge the elderly, infirm, orphans, sick, and indigents.

Registered as a heritage site since 1862, it is now a medicine history museum.

The external walls look very stern in comparison to the lavish décor of the internal courtyard, at the centre of the buildings.

The coloured roof tiles and the gold of The Last Judgement altar piece by the Flemish master Rogier Van Der Weyden made the building world famous.

With its majestic size 46.3 m long and 16 m high), the Great Room of the Poor is covered by a split barrel arch. This room contains the hospital beds, all draped in red and turned towards the chapel, so the patients could attend mass in the best possible conditions.

The Saint-Nicolas room is located at the north-west corner of the yard, it was for the patients suffering from the most serious conditions. It is currently used as a display room for the history of the hospitals and its vineyards.

When most French hospitals used to own farmlands or forests, the Hospices de Beaune used to fund their activities thanks to vineyards developed throughout the centuries. The first vineyard was given to the Hospices in 1457.

Today, the Hospices owns around 60 hectares of vineyard, 85% of which are premier cru and grand cru. The wine is auctioned on the 3rd Sunday of November in the most famous wine auction in the world.
